The ICT Authority Ag. CEO Robert Mugo has today urged ICT CeCs and Directors to champion the increased uptake of ICTs to spur development in all counties.
Mr. Mugo was speaking at the 2018 County ICT Forum that brings together ICT CeCs from all 47 counties which he officially launched.
Mugo lauded the counties that have partnered with the ICT Authority with regards to the smart county initiative and the County ICT Road maps. The smart county project was a first initiative of the ICT Authority and provided ICT equipment to each of the 47 counties to assist in their automation. In Nairobi county the ICT Authority supported the development of a state of the art data centre and a unified communication system. The ICT Authority has supported the development of ICT Road maps aligned with the national ICT Master plan and their local county development plans in each of the 47 counties.
ICT Authority also equipped the county HQs (plus some Sub Counties) with basic equipment that include office applications, emails and training. In addition, the ICT CEO complimented the counties who have implemented certain aspects of the ICT Road Maps as guided by the National ICT Master Plan (2018-2028).
The CEO also noted that the National ICT Masterplan 2013/14-2017/18 created the ICT County Forum as part of the ICT Governance structure. As a result, the consultations between the County Governments and National Government on ICT.The flagship projects by National government; National Optical Fibre Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI), County Connectivity Project (CCP), Presidential Digital Talent Programme (PDTP) and the Ajira Digital Programme (ADP) have received support and helped service delivery both at the County and National Level.
Mugo asked the County ICT leadership to actively participate in the review of the National ICT Policy and the National ICT Masterplan adding that this will provide an opportunity for Counties, drawing from past experience, to ensure that these policy documents capture the essence of county government and provide adequate support and cover for ICT initiatives in counties.
On the Ajira Digital Program that is now implemented by the ICT Authority, the CEO has said his agency intend to register and train 1 million youth by 2022.He urged the counties to partner in this the program which aims to develop a pool of online workers with skills on online work and digitally enabled jobs by providing work, register on the Ajira platform where we are collaborating with several partners to find work for the youth and providing work delivery centers where onsite training and mentorship can be done.
The 2018 ICT County Forum was organised in partnership with Atlancis Technologies a leading provider of Enterprise ICT solutions to public and private sector organizations in Africa. According to the CEO Daniel Kinyua his firm is spearheading the Smart County Solution that is useful in the automation of citizen services.
Also present in the Forum were Paul Rono, Director of Standards at ICT, Mike Macharia, CEO seven seas and Nailab CEO, Sam Gichuru.
